The "wonderful world" of Willesden Green
A diverse area of many cultures and supplied with the Jubilee Line tube service. Willesden Green doesn't appear to have definite borders or a "Green", I would say it starts at Cricklewood Broadway and stretches as far as Willesden High Rd and the division line of "Willesden Green Library" which separates Willesden Green from Willesden and Neasden. The main streets are Walm Lane and Willesden High Rd. To the North of Willesden Green you have Dollis Hill and Neasden and the gateway to the M1 and the North of Britain, South will take you to Kilburn or Kensal Rise, east of Willesden Green you will find Barnet, Cricklewood and Camden, west will take you to Harlesden, Acton and Shepherd's Bush. So let's try and find the beauty of the place and focus on the positive. Centered around the underground station you will find a mixture of pubs and restaurants, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Irish, Australian to name a few. In this guide I will try to point out the little gems I have found and the not so little gems. Next to the station is Station Parade that leads to the Central Mosque of Brent. Also on Station Parade is Mistrys Chemist, they specialize in health products. Next to Mistrys is the Little Star restaurant, they serve a variety of food and a cheap Sunday Lunch. Exit Willesden Green Station and across the road to the left on Walm Lane there is a pub/restaurant called "The Green" where you can get a decent bite to eat, trendy would be the word to describe it, although trendy is not a word that springs to mind in Willesden Green but it is worth a look. you can certainly take your mother there. Opposite the Green you have "Shish", a bar/eating place that serves affordable food, appears to be quite a popular venue. To the right and left of the station is "Walm Lane" the main street of Willesden Green, here you will find an abundance of kebab shops and off-licenses, a fish and chip shop, and numerous estate agents, but no craft shops, art galleries or anything of cultural value. ![]() "Angies" what can one say, as local as it comes, if you like horse racing, Irish folk and the craec - go no further, it offers a friendly atmosphere and good beer. Walk along Walm Lane towards Willesden High Rd and here you will find the "Big Bite"fish and chip shop, the best in the area. Opposite the Big Bite there is a pub called McGowans, it's under new management and the the closest to the station, serves cheap beer Monday to Friday and worth a visit. Further along you will see a Japanese restaurant the "Sushi-Say" lots of write ups in restaurant guides, expensive but recommended. Continue along past "Angies" and you will reach the junction of Willesden High Rd turn right. There are two restaurants here the "Sino Thai" which serves oriental food and further along the "Bengal Restaurant" the local curry house. Continue onwards and you have Sainsbury's on the left and 50 metres on you will reach Willesden Library and the Belle Vue Cinema. ![]() Also along the High Rd, you will find the "Spotted Dog" a local music venue that has a downstairs music venue, which has a late licence (used to be the Sindrome) it's a late night antipodean pub that often features live bands, if no live bands are playing then there is usually a DJ. Get your polish sausage from the "Red Pig" Poliskie Delikatesy and visit the "Billabong" the australian internet cafe and shop. There is a Park in Willesden Green/Cricklewood, "Gladstone Park" which stretches from Willesden Green/Cricklewood to Dollis Hill. At the Willesden Green end of the park, situated on Olive Rd, you will find Cricklewood Library home of the Cricklewood and Brent Archives. ![]() If you are stuck for a public convenience in the area, the only one I am aware of is situated in the library complex.
